5 Easy No-Sew Upcycling Projects

Almost everyone has old clothes hiding at the back of the closet that they don’t know what to do with. Whether it’s because of sentimental value or lack of motivation, it’s not uncommon for those clothes to sit there for years. This year, you can find a new purpose for your old clothes and get your creative juices flowing with these simple no-sew upcycling projects.

Knotted t-shirt headbands

It’s easy to accumulate a million t-shirts. Luckily the creative genius at Julie Measures has developed a simple project to turn those extra shirts into stylish knotted headbands. Simply follow the clear instructions of cutting the shirts into “t-shirt yarn”, knot the newly made yarn, and attach the ends together! The possibilities are almost as endless as the compliments you’ll receive.

Shirt tote bags

Those extra shirts can have purpose once more, even if that purpose is a little different from before. With just a few cuts and knots your shirts can be resurrected into multi-use tote bags. Help the world become cleaner and more sustainable by not only reusing the clothing from your closet, but reducing the amount of plastic bags that your need to use as well! To create this simple, no-sew, upcycled bag, follow these simple steps

  1. Cut off the sleeves of the shirt.
  2. Cut the neck off the shirt. This will be the opening, so you will likely want to go beyond the collar line of the original shirt. Make sure to not get too close to the opening from the sleeves, you want plenty of room for the straps.
  3. Lay the shirt flat and cut the bottom into approximately 1 inch ribbons.
  4. Line up the front and back ribbons and knot.

Upcycled winter cowl

Even with winter coming to a close, there are still times where you need a little extra warmth. In those moments, you can simply upcycle your old sweaters into a cozy winter cowl! To do this, simply cut in a straight line to cut off the body of the sweater right under the arms. With that one cut, you’re done and ready to face the world a little warmer and more eco-friendly!

Upcycled No-Sew Masks

As hard as it can be, it doesn’t look like masks will be going anywhere in the near future. Luckily replenishing your mask stock can be easy with this simple no-sew mask project. The crafty creator at Wobisobi has all the instructions you need to quickly turn simple fabric into a trendy mask. Simply choose the fabric, cut out the pattern, tie the straps, and you are ready to go!
